There are times when you have to decide something, you overthink, overanalyze relentlessly, leaving you frozen and stuck. Many people will tell you that you need to decide and take action. In some situations that is prudent advice, but not all. There can be a danger in making quick decisions without any analysis with long lasting ramifications. That danger is often overlooked. A split second decision can change everything.
Impulsivity can be a major culprit in making these split second decisions. When we are in a rush or we feel pressured to make a quick decision, we sometimes make these split second decisions which can leave us feeling stressed, anxious and overcommitted. People who have a hard time saying NO to others may struggle with this. A remedy for this is to say you will think about it before you answer if you are asked to make a decision.
Sometimes our judgement or ability to think rationally can be clouded if we are abusing drugs or alcohol. A remedy for this is to have a back up plan in place. Have someone you can call on if you need help so you aren’t endangering yourself or others if you know you’ve engaged in drug use or had too much alcohol to drink. Better yet… ABSTAIN…Do you really need to use drugs or alcohol? If you feel like you can’t relax or have a good time without the use of drugs or alcohol, it may symbolize a bigger problem in your life you need to deal with.
When we become overly emotional we may make split second decisions we regret later. Remember, we can’t take back the words we say and some actions done in the heat of the moment can affect us and others in our lives forever. Take time to be alone to get your emotions under control or call a friend who can listen to you, help you calm down and perhaps offer advice.
Our long term goal should always be to live with as few regrets as possible. When we feel good about our decisions we can live a happy life that is filled with joy and peace and lived out confidently
