Developing a Spiritual Hunger for God

Have you ever had a persistent food craving? If you have ever been pregnant or have experienced losing your appetite due to sickness and then getting it back once you felt better, then I’m sure you’ve experienced a food craving. When we initially satisfy our craving it feels amazing, but this feeling fades quickly.

When we make a lifestyle choice to eat healthy, although it’s not always easy and sometimes we miss the mark; eventually our persistence pays off and our bodies actually start to crave healthy foods. We reap the benefits of more energy, better sleep, losing fat and gaining lean muscle mass which makes us the very best physical versions of ourselves.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. Sometimes we may consume our “favorite meal” which might be a few drinks too many, the shopping spree we hide from others, the recreational drugs we tell ourselves we need to unwind, the lie we tell our boss to cut corners at work and get ahead or the harmless flirtation we engage in with our neighbor even though we are married. Just like our favorite meal, the satisfaction from these things never lasts.

When we chase things of the world such as money, prestige, power, popularity or notoriety or even “worldly saint hood” (we want people to notice how Godly we are), we are never satisfied long term. Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher and theologian said, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made know through Jesus Christ.”

John 6:33-35 says this: For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

Hungering after God is the only way our souls can be truly satisfied. If you long to know Jesus more or you struggle to hunger for God, pray Psalm 42:1- daily:

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

He will answer your prayer as you meet with him and HE will put a spiritual hunger in your heart that only HE can fill.
